From dawn until dusk, Mrs. Mrs. Theuk Pheuy devotes her time and energy to her vegetable farm in Popis village, Krabei Riel commune, Siem Reap district, Siem Reap province. With care and precision, she tends to her crops daily, ensuring that her vegetables meet both the quality and quantity demanded by the market.
As a mixed-vegetable farmer, Mrs. Pheuy has built her livelihood through hard work, resilience and an unwavering passion for agriculture. Despite the physical challenges that farming often brings, she has remained committed to improving her production and expanding her business year after year.
Recognising the growing demand for fresh vegetables in the local market, Mrs. Pheuy made a strategic decision to expand her farming operations. In 2015, she partnered with LOLC Cambodia and obtained her first loan of two million riel to invest in seeds and essential farming equipment. This initial step enabled her to improve cultivation efficiency and increase productivity.
Encouraged by the positive results, she continued to grow her business. In 2017, she accessed a second loan of three million to expand her cultivation area and diversify her crops. A year later, in 2018, she secured a larger loan of $6,000, which allowed her to purchase additional farmland, marking a significant milestone in her journey. This expansion enabled her to increase output and supply vegetables to the market more consistently.
By 2024, with her income becoming more stable, Mrs. Pheuy took another important step forward. She obtained a fourth loan of $22,000 to purchase residential land and build a new, comfortable home for her family, demonstrating how sustainable business growth can translate into improved living conditions.
Today, through disciplined financial management and the effective use of financing, Mrs. Theuk Pheuy has transformed her small-scale farming operation into a reliable source of income. She has become one of the key vegetable suppliers in her local community, contributing not only to her family’s well-being but also to local food supply.
Her journey reflects the powerful impact of access to finance when combined with determination and responsible planning. It highlights how financial inclusion can empower individuals, strengthen rural livelihoods and support sustainable economic development in Cambodia.
